Breast Reconstruction:

Implant or Expander

Patients with smaller breasts or those who prefer a simple reconstructive procedure can achieve good results by the use of an implant or tissue-expander alone, placed under the pectoral (chest wall) muscles.

The procedure and recovery times are significantly shorter than other types of reconstruction.

Latissimus Dorsi Flap

The latissimus dorsi flap (utilizing muscle, fat and skin from the back) is usually combined with an implant and provides a more natural result for patients with medium to larger breasts. It requires a shorter operative time and recovery than a free-flap type procedure (such as the TRAM or DIEP flaps).
