The nose plays a central role in defining the overall appearance, impression and attractiveness of the face. The size and shape of the nose in relation to the rest of the face and its other features are key factors and the ideal nasal proportions vary between the sexes.

A rhinoplasty or “nose-job” is the surgical procedure used to improve the appearance of the nose. There are a number of different types of rhinoplasty techniques - their aim is to produce a nose of more ideal proportion and shape in relation to the rest of the face.

The exact requirements and particular type of procedure will vary from one individual to another but the overall aim is to produce a more attractive, natural and harmonious nasal and facial appearance.

The particular type and elements of the rhinoplasty recommended for each individual patient will be discussed after careful examination and discussion with the patient.

The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic and usually requires an overnight stay. Post-operatively a nasal splint is worn for 7-10 days and the nose will normally have a degree of swelling which settles over several weeks. The most obvious swelling settles relatively quickly but complete resolution of all swelling, particularly around the tip, can take several months before the final result is fully apparent.
